Position Description:

The person in this position will provide systems engineering, requirements management, verification and validation (V&V) coordination, and element/system level integration support to the MSFC Systems Requirements, Verification & Validation Branch (EV72) for support to the Space Launch Systems (SLS) Program Spacecraft Payload Integration and Evolution (SPIE) Element Project Office, and to the MSFC Systems Engineering and Integration Division (EV70).

The successful candidate will coordinate and interface with multiple engineering disciplines, system elements, cross-program elements and customers, as well as participate in reviews, meetings, working groups, task teams, and trade studies. The candidate will supply leadership and/or support for the development of key systems engineering products including requirement, specifications, support program/project milestones and subsequent activities where these products are assessed and matured. The successful candidate will work with the SLS SPIE element customers/partners from inception to deployment to ensure stakeholder needs are satisfied.

System engineering support to be provided by the candidate includes the following responsibilities:

  • Lead and/or support development of SPIE element requirements and verification products and ensure compliance with these requirements during development, testing and evaluation of SPIE sub-elements.

  • Provide technical integration with other engineering disciplines, the SPIE Program element and cross-program elements, including risk-based insight/oversight through assessment of requirements and verification activities.

  • Support the SPIE Lead Systems Engineer and Engineering Discipline Lead Engineers to evaluate prime contractor deliverables, including assessments of element Detailed Verification Objectives and verification of allocated end item specification requirements.

  • Perform systems engineering tasks and assessments to support the SLS SPIE Program through reviews, meetings, working groups, trade studies and development of key systems engineering products to support program milestones.

  • Develop integrated schedules and other tracking mechanisms to manage the work and identify risks and opportunities.

  • Implement Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) best practices, approaches, techniques, and tools.

  • Provide support for requirement V&V including V&V planning, execution, coordination, and integration for system level requirements to assure design compliance.

  • Communicate technical issues, risks, best practices and lessons-learned related to products, technical positions, requirement management, and V&V practices and develop integrated schedules and other tracking mechanisms to manage systems engineering tasks.


A degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline is required. Degree from an ABET accredited institution is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS degree with at least 10 years of relevant experience in systems engineering and integration, launch vehicle definition, functional design, design integration, launch vehicle performance analyses, flight evaluation planning, requirement verification, and/or requirement validation.

Applicants must have the following required qualifications:

  • Ability to function in a self-directed dynamic work environment as an effective team member, willing to assume a leadership role in the SPIE systems engineering effort.

  • Experience in developing systems requirements, verification strategies, and verification planning as well as facilitating the successful completion of verification compliance activities.

  • Familiarity with Systems Engineering policies and procedures related to verification and experience with using tools/systems to manage verification compliance data.

  • Demonstrated experience working across organizational boundaries and engineering disciplines to facilitate and execute program systems engineering tasks and resolve systems integration issues.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering executive-level briefings, excellent oral, written, and customer relation skills, and proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).



Applicants should also have one or more of the following desired qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in effective technical leadership of an engineering team.

  • An understanding and knowledge of the current SLS program and a working understanding of the SLS Element interfaces.

  • Knowledge of launch vehicle programmatic planning processes and experience performing oversight of prime contractor hardware production, test, and certification efforts.

  • Familiarity with NASA Systems Engineering policies and procedures.

  • Familiarity with aerospace vehicle and system design.

  • Experience with defining and managing interfaces, interface requirements, and interface verification.

  • Experience with Digital Engineering Tools, such as: DOORS Next Generation, Jira, MagicDraw, or similar tools.

  • Certification in Model Based System Engineering (MBSE), particularly Object Management Group® (OMG)-Certified Systems Modeling Professional™ (OCSMP™) Certification.



Essential Functions

Work Environment:

General office environment (100%). Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<10%)

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Amentum facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
