Come join our team on the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract whose work is destined to have a long-range effect on future generations! The Valves Actuators Lines and Ducts Propulsion Team is seeking a Senior or Subject Matter Expert Valve Design & Development Engineer.
Activities may include but not be limited to:
- Provide design of valves for small hypergolic propulsion systems to large cryogenic liquid engines or stages.
- Create part and assembly CAD models and detailed drawings for prototyping purposes.
- Create or review valves specifications.
- Create valve test plans and oversee qualification testing.
- Analyze test data and create performance reports.
- Perform “hands-on” test preparation for valve assembly in a lab environment.
- Provide oversight or insight for commercial partner valve design during reviews and other activities.
- Present progress updates to upper management.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Degree in Engineering or related (STEM) field from an ABET-accredited university is required. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D. with a minimum 9 years of experience; Masters with at least 13 years of experience, or a BS with at least 15 years of experience.
Required skills/experience: - Proven knowledge and experience with valve design and testing used in rocket propulsion or cryogen applications.
- Knowledge of NASA mechanism standards (5017) and other associated NASA Standards.
- Experience with valve actuator design and application sizing calculations.
- Knowledge of fabrication, quality control, and material selection relative to valve manufacturing processes depending on control fluid.
- Experience with valve sealing material selection for different propellants or fluids.
- Good CAD skills (CREO preferred) with part modeling, assemblies, and detailed drawing creation.
Desired Experience / Skills: - Direct valve design experience for rocket propulsion systems.
- Knowledge of design considerations for hypergolic and cryogenic propellants as it relates to valves.
- Knowledge of NASA and/or aerospace design and construction standards governing valve design and applications.
- Direct valve test experience in a lab environment.
- Able to provide valve related insight for commercial partners.
- Experience analyzing hot fire test data and to identify anomalies related to valve performance.
- CAD experience, CREO preferred.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
Essential FunctionsWork Environment: Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (10%). Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).
Physical Requirements:Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).
Equipment and Machines: Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
Attendance:Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
Other Essential Functions:The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
