Responsible for the vehicle maintenance of heavy and light equipment in continental field camps and science traverses. Supervises, trains and supports field equipment technicians. Monitors labor and cost tracking associated with Field Area mechanical assets. Coordinates associated procurements, movements, tracking, storage, and inventory in conjunction with Field Area and science project management.  Integrates with all internal stakeholders regarding field fleet management.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
  • Directs the activities necessary to maintain and repair light vehicle and heavy equipment assets of the United States Antarctic Program.
  • Sets deadlines and establishes the sequence of work operations to be followed; maintains balanced workloads by shifting assignments, workers, and other resources to achieve the most effective work operations.
  • Reviews and analyzes work accomplishments, cost, and utilization of subordinates to evaluate work progress, control costs, and anticipate and avoid possible problems by recommending corrective action to upper-level management personnel.
  • Ensures all employees are trained for the specific task assigned.
  • Works with existing project budget parameters.
  • Position supervises the work of all field mechanics, skilled and unskilled labor engaged in the repair and upkeep of program capital equipment.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and repair of all assets.
  • Maintains vehicles and equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations and industry standards.
  • Determines annual re-supply requirements and ensures all requisitions are submitted in accordance with schedules, guidelines and policies in order to meet shipping deadlines for annual supply vessel delivery.
  • Position monitors all work in-progress to ensure quality, timely completion and control of material.
  • Incumbent provides labor and material support to USAP field camps and other stations as directed.
  • Performs follow up inspections as required on equipment.
  • Documents work order progress, maintains records of shop activities and prepares and submits reports as requested.
  • Incumbent handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management guidelines and policies.
  • Field Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor will perform duties in support of Field Area metrics and will provide training and orientation for subordinate employees on performance, documentation and activities that affect the achievement Operations Division metrics.
  • Maintains strong working relationship with Fleet Management and McMurdo Operations while supporting broader Fleet Management initiatives and standards.
  • Adequately, accurately and honestly track all data related to metrics.
  • Supports the achievement of ASC metrics, whether metrics can be directly or indirectly affected by this position's activities.
  • Complies with all ASC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals and provide documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.
  • Performs other duties as required. 

Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree. Two years training at a technical school is preferred.
  • US Driver's license is required.
  • Minimum of six years’ experience in vehicle maintenance with an additional three years of experience at the supervisory level is required.

Expected Skills and Competencies:

  • Requires knowledge of mechanical theory applying to commercial and special purpose design vehicles and equipment, using lubricants and tools, methods of hoisting an handling heavy mechanisms, internal combustion engines and electrical and hydraulics systems.
  • Requires excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with fleet maintenance and/or fleet management experience preferred.

Field Area Requirements:

  • A proven ability to work in remote, harsh environments is required.
  • Must be able and willing to deploy to and work in sites with extreme cold temperatures for long hours and sleep in an unheated tent.
  • Basic to advanced first aid training is preferred; Wilderness First Responder Certification is desirable.
  • Experience in any combination of the following is preferred: expeditionary outdoor work; logistics planning and executing for remote, multiday/multi-week camps or traverses supported by heavy equipment operations.

Physical and/or Other Requirements:

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.
  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
