Purpose/Scope

Provides on-site supervision of mechanics in the installation, repair and modification of various unique systems and mechanical equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Plans the mechanics tasks.
  • Assigns duties and examines work for exactness, neatness, and conformance to policies and procedures.
  • Determines type of repairs or replacement requirements.
  • Be able to forecast and order repair parts to prevent work stoppage of machines and equipment supporting company operations.
  • Estimates efforts of other trades required to complete assignments.
  • Works closely with work scheduling office and estimator in scheduling tasks and planning for pre-staging of materials.
  • Provides the purchasing department with the necessary technical information to obtain replacement parts and special supplies.
  • Responsible for maintaining records up to date.
  • Responsible for quality, productivity and morale in section.
  • Enforces company policies, procedures, and general work rules.
  • Reviews all work orders, labor time sheets and material requests for accuracy before submitting to work control for action.

  • As a General Maintenance Supervisor, you will be responsible for training, supervising and assisting mechanics in your section in support of the following tasks:
  • Examine machines and mechanical equipment to diagnose source of trouble.
  • Reassemble equipment after completion of inspections, testing, or repairs.
  • Repair or replace broken or malfunctioning components of machinery or equipment.
  • Observe and test the operation of machinery or equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using voltmeters or other testing devices.
  • Dismantle or partly dismantle machines and perform repairs that mainly involve the use of hand tools in scraping and fitting parts.
  • Replace broken or defective parts with items obtained from stock, order the production of a replacement part by a machine shop, or send the machine to a machine shop for major repairs.
  • Prepare written specifications for major repairs or to produce parts ordered from machine shops, reassemble machines and make all necessary adjustments for operation.
  • Record repairs and maintenance performed.

Minimum Knowledge

Four (4) years’ overall maintenance experience at the journeyman level, plus one (1) year supervisory experience. Must have at least 2 years’ experience in the facility maintenance trades supporting heavy commercial and industrial complexes. Trades could include air-conditioning, heating, electrical systems, fire alarm systems, boilers and steam converters, carpenter, painting. Must have related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discount, interest, commissions proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for periods of time more than 30 minutes; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to areas of extreme heat, vibration, moving mechanical parts, automated machines operating on high voltage rail lines, and work areas that have multiple obstacles that could result in trips or falls if not navigated correctly (employee needs to be able to step over multiple obstacles in succession ranging from 12-18 inches in height over a distance of +50 feet in length). The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and may require wearing hearing protection; requires communication via 2-way radio with equipment operators for incident resolution.
