SCOPE OF WORK:

Independently perform all modes of maintenance, operation, repair, adjustment, modification, overhaul, engine removal, and installation of heavy equipment. Such heavy equipment includes but its not limited to: cranes, forklifts, tractors, stationary and portable engines, installed and mobile power generators, diesel, gasoline or electric powered.  Transports mobile power generators to required locations and operates mobile and/or stationary units in any or all modes as applicable.  Perform complete functional tests to confirm accuracy of completed work.  Perform any work assigned to the employees in the classification.  Perform work in other classifications when incidental but necessary to accomplish work assignment.

Able to trace and locate defects which cause hydraulic and other major systems to fail or not perform up to specifications regarding power output, lifting capacity, speed, and pressure. Analyze malfunctions and determine the extent of repairs necessary by visual and auditory examinations and by the use of a wide variety of test equipment, such as engine analyzers, dynamometers, exhaust analyzers, vacuum and fuel pump testers, injector testers, ignition timers, tachometers, voltmeters and gauges, micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators.  Able to select and comply with technical manuals, illustrations, specifications, diagrams, schematics, and similar guides to make repairs and modifications according to specifications and procedures. For example, some of these guides describe and show the complete assembly of engines and transmissions, and the layout of hydraulic systems with related pneumatic, electrical, and mechanical connections and controls. Mechanics at this level have skill in measuring, fitting, and installing components, such as pistons, valves, bearings, gears, and cylinders, to specified clearances. They can connect, mesh, align, and adjust parts and systems to assure proper operation of the complete system or vehicle. For example, they adjust pumps, power boosters, drive chains, and tension devices; synchronize remote or manual electrical and hydraulic controls; and set timing of magnetos, distributors, injectors, and injection pumps to engine specifications.

Performs duties in compliance with Federal, State, local, NASA and Air Force laws and regulations and requirements and KSC/CCAFS energy management conservation regulations, collective bargaining agreements, security, safety, hurricane and other specialized programs or contractual requirements relating to the business of the section, working within the limits of established policy.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work from written and verbal information, blueprints, skematics, diagrams, vendor manuals and manufacturer’s specifications to accomplish assignments.
  • Perform functional and operational tests of reworked and repaired equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance and running of equipment.
  • Use measuring devices, instruments, test fixtures and special tools, as required, to accomplish assignment.
  • Operates gas welding equipment to perform cutting, burning, and soldering, as necessary to accomplish work assignments.
  • May provide guidance and direction to lower classified employees, as required.
  • Maintain logs and records, as required.

  • Attend and participate in a variety of meetings and task force groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problem and maintain specific level of knowledge pertaining to new developments, requirements and policies.
  • Perform or assist with any departmental operations, under direction, to maintain work flow.
  • Maintain security clearance, area permit(s), licenses, certifications, etc. required for performance of assigned tasks.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Performs other related and/or associated duties as required.
  • This classification includes using and managing hazardous materials

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Lift, push, pull, and carry heavy objects exceeding 30 pounds
  • Walk, stand, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl and bend/twist body for extended periods of time
  • Work at heights
    • Walk up/down stairs frequently
    • Climb ladders and scaffolding
  • Use hands to handle, control, feel objects, tools and make adjustments to equipment controls
  • Frequently perform repetitive movements
  • Ability to correctly perform with corrective devices, tasks that require close visual acuity, depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus
  • Wear job/task related/required PPE:  i.e. safety shoes, hearing / eye protection, hard hat, respirators, gloves, fall protection etc.
  • Tolerate in and outdoor extreme cold, heat and humid conditions for extended periods of time
  • May be required to work in areas where high noise hazards prevail.
  • May be exposed to fumes, airborne particles and electrical shock hazards.
  • May be required to work a flexible work schedule and on alternating work days to meet mission and customer requirements.  

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE / CERTIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and
    • A recognized apprenticeship training program plus 2 years of experience OR
    • Military or Civilian vocational training plus 2 years of experience OR
    • 5 years of direct work-related skills, knowledge, and experience
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain job related Licenses, Certifications etc. required by Federal, State, local, NASA and Air Force standards, rules and regulations
  • Able to interact with customers and coworkers in a courteous, professional, and effective manner.
  • Work independently and as part of a team

Must have working knowledge of computers and work-related computer programs associated with the position
