The person in this position will provide Systems Engineering, Requirements management, Verification, and Validation (RV&V) coordination, system level integration support, Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) support and Digital Transformation coordination to the MSFC Systems Design and Verification Branch (EV72) for support to the Human Lander System (HLS) Office, and to the MSFC Systems Engineering and Integration Division (EV70).

The successful candidate will coordinate and interface with multiple engineering disciplines, system elements, cross-program elements, and customers, as well as participate in reviews, meetings, working groups, task teams, and trade studies. The candidate will supply leadership and/or support for the implementation of model-based systems engineering solutions and the digital transformation of key systems engineering products including requirements specifications, support program/project deliverables and subsequent activities where these products are assessed and matured. The successful candidate will work with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and systems engineers across the division to evaluate the available systems engineering solution kits, tailor as needed for program integration, and ensure consistent implementation across programs/projects/elements, while embracing the Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Digital Engineering strategy. The candidate will work with the HLS customers/partners from inception to deployment to ensure stakeholder needs are satisfied.

System engineering support to be provided by the candidate includes the following responsibilities:

  • Lead and Innovate: Spearhead the planning, organization, and implementation of model-based systems engineering processes, driving improvements and fostering a culture of excellence.
  • Program-Centric Approach: Collaborate closely with Branch customers to support the definition of system requirements, enable seamless systems integration, ensure systems verification, and the delivery of integrated systems engineering models.
  • Architectural Excellence: Conduct comprehensive analyses to optimize system architecture, ensuring mission success through innovative solutions such as open architecture standards.
  • Safety and Quality Assurance: Lead efforts to analyze and integrate critical systems factors, including safety, reliability, and quality, for systems engineering products that utilize MBSE approaches.
  • Subject Matter Expert: Leverage Systems Engineering and MBSE experience to implement, maintain, and refine the MBSE approach.
  • Lead and/or support development of HLS requirements and verification products and ensure compliance with these requirements during development, testing and evaluation of HLS components.
  • Provide technical integration with other engineering disciplines, the HLS Program, and cross-program elements, including risk-based insight/oversight through assessment of requirements and verification activities.
  • Support the HLS Lead Systems Engineer (LSE) and Engineering Discipline Lead Engineers (EDLEs) to evaluate prime contractor deliverables, including assessments of element Detailed Verification Objectives and verification of allocated end item specification requirements.
  • Perform systems engineering tasks and assessments to support the HLS Program through reviews, meetings, working groups, trade studies and development of key systems engineering products to support program milestones.
  • Implement Digital Engineering best practices, approaches, techniques, and tools.
  • Provide support for requirement V&V including V&V planning, execution, coordination, and integration for system level requirements to assure design compliance.
  • Communicate technical issues, risks, best practices and lessons-learned related to products, technical positions, requirement management, and V&V practices and develop integrated schedules and other tracking mechanisms to manage systems engineering tasks.


Qualifications

Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Systems Engineering or related field is required. A degree from an ABET accredited institution preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS degree with at least 15 years of relevant experience in systems engineering and integration, launch vehicle definition, functional design, design integration, launch vehicle performance analyses, flight evaluation planning, requirement verification, and/or requirement validation.

Applicants must have the following required qualifications:

  • Ability to function in a self-directed dynamic work environment as an effective team member, willing to assume a leadership role in the HLS systems engineering effort.

  • Prior Systems Engineering experience to include but not limited to system design, functional decomposition, requirements development, analysis, verification, and validation.

  • Familiarity with Systems Engineering policies and procedures related to verification and experience with using tools/systems to manage verification compliance data.

  • Prior Systems Engineering experience to include but not limited to system design, functional decomposition, requirements development, analysis, verification, and validation.

  • Demonstrate experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools such as MagicDraw or similar Systems Modeling Language (SysML)-compatible tool for systems architecture and model development as well as experience with the following Digital Engineering tools DOORS Next Generation, Jira, or similar tools.

  • Conduct comprehensive analyses to optimize system architecture, ensuring mission success through innovative solutions such as open architecture standards.

  • Lead efforts to analyze and integrate critical systems factors, including safety, reliability, and quality, for systems engineering products that utilize MBSE approaches.

  • Leverage Systems Engineering and MBSE experience to implement, maintain, and refine the MBSE approach.

  • Demonstrate experience/domain knowledge of system architecture, requirements, interface definition, verification, and validation.

  • Leadership experience to include but not limited to engineering leadership roles and/or leading work and driving teams to success.

  • Demonstrated experience working across organizational boundaries and engineering disciplines to facilitate and execute program systems engineering tasks and resolve systems integration issues.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering executive-level briefings, excellent oral, written, and customer relation skills, and proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).



Applicants should also have one or more of the following desired qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in effective technical leadership of an engineering team.

  • An understanding and knowledge of the current SLS program and a working understanding of the SLS Element interfaces.

  • Knowledge of launch vehicle programmatic planning processes and experience performing oversight of prime contractor hardware production, test, and certification efforts.

  • Familiarity with NASA Systems Engineering policies and procedures.

  • Familiarity with aerospace vehicle and system design.

  • Experience with defining and managing interfaces, interface requirements, and interface verification.

  • Certification in Model Based System Engineering (MBSE), particularly Object Management Group® (OMG)-Certified Systems Modeling Professional™ (OCSMP™) Certification.

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (10%). Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and other facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
