The COMET contract provides overall management and implementation of ground systems capabilities, flight hardware processing, and launch operations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. These tasks will support the International Space Station, Ground Systems Development and Operations, and the Space Launch System, Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, and Launch Services programs.

THIS IS A COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT REPRESENTED POSITION

Responsibilities

As part of the team, you will:

  • Independently perform as a technician in the installation, construction, layout, fabrication, modification, assembly, repair, machining, milling, turning, shaping, grinding, cutting, etc., of precision machined parts, components and assemblies.

  • Interpret engineering drawings, sketches, and work instructions to carry out written work assignments with minimal oversight.

  • Independently perform as a certified technician to rework, repair, or modify existing fabrications for fit and dimensional accuracy.

  • Perform effectively in a fast-paced job shop environment where fabrications are unique and time sensitive. Production runs are minimal.

  • Independently perform as a certified technician to set up, adjust and operate all shop floor CNC and manual machines such as lathes, grinders, shapers, milling machines, presses, etc.

  • Work directly with engineering personnel and technicians on the installation, and operation of components, special systems, and equipment.

  • Build-up of manufactured parts into final assemblies per print and work instructions.

  • Operate forklift and man-lift equipment in the performance of work assignments as required.

  • Work at elevated locations using systems/equipment such as ladders, man-lifts, scaffolding and other work platforms.

  • Operate shop mechanical equipment, systems, and tools in the performance of work duties.

  • Clean hardware and components prior to, during, and after assembly using established procedures and specifications.

  • Maintain equipment as necessary, including minor preventive maintenance, repairs, or replacement of parts.

  • Execute all work duties in a skilled, safe, and technically acceptable manner.

  • Wear and utilize appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and clothing during performance of work duties, to include safety glasses/goggles, hard hats, gloves, masks, respirators, coveralls, harnesses, etc.

  • Identify and correct potential hazards and/or unsafe acts/conditions at the work site.

  • Notify Supervision of any hazards in the workplace and advise on potential corrective actions.

  • Maintain work area in a neat, clean, orderly, and safe condition.

  • Perform work in other classifications when incidental, but necessary to accomplish work assignment.

  • Provides day-to-day technical support for operations and maintenance issues.

  • Interface with customers and communicate completion of tasks per schedule, to the customer's satisfaction.



Job Requirements

Must have a High School degree and 3 years of related experience.

  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a team environment

  • Requires a minimum of 2 years of demonstrated experience with CAD/CAM.

  • Requires a minimum of 3 years of demonstrated experience with CNC (mill & lathe), as well as a fundamental understanding of maintenance requirements and troubleshooting.

  • Requires demonstrated experience working with G-code. The candidate will have the ability to hand edit G-code on the shop floor, having a fundamental understanding of what the code is doing.

  • Requires demonstrated experience with the interpretation of complex drawings, including fundamentals and symbols associated with GD&T.

  • Requires the ability to independently exact setups and perform fabrication per print.

  • Requires the ability to independently determine speed and feed rates for common cutting tools and materials.

  • Requires rounded training and experience acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.

  • Demonstrate advanced communication and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate work status, resolve technical issues and assist in troubleshooting and identifying solutions to ensure continuation of work to meet demanding schedules.

  • Must be able to coordinate work between multiple project disciplines

  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects without missing deadlines or sacrificing accuracy

  • Must be self-motivated, demonstrate initiative, and be able to work in dynamic environments

  • Must be able to work independently or with minimal supervision

  • Demonstrated written and verbal presentation skills for interfacing with management and customers (internal and external)

  • Familiar with basic mechanical equipment and systems.

  • Ability to build positive/effective relationships with clients and co-workers and demonstrates focus on satisfying both internal and external customers

  • Accepts responsibility for safety of yourself and others



Physical Requirements

  • Will be required to climb stairs to access equipment for troubleshooting, work assignment assessments, engineering evaluation and more.

  • Will be required to wear hearing protection, eye protection, hard hat, safety shoes and other associated personal protective equipment.

  • Position may involve extended periods of sitting or standing.

  • Physical requirements are sitting, walking, standing, extensive use of stairs, and access to remote structures.

  • Position is located in a fabrication facility on a large industrial site; must be able to quickly evacuate buildings/areas in the event of an emergency.



Work Environment

  • Work Environment requires to work inside and outside throughout the work and shop areas.

  • Position may require daily individual to travel to different areas on site.

  • Walking on uneven terrain including paved areas, gravel/rocks, and dirt surfaces is required to access various locations on the facility.

  • Climbing ladders, stairs and potential work at heights will be necessary.

  • All work must be completed in a safe manner in accordance with NASA, OSHA, and Company safety standards.



Equipment and Machines

  • Computers and printers

  • CNC and manual lathes, milling machines, water jet machine, grinders, shapers, milling machines, presses, etc.

  • Cutting, fabricating, forming pipe machines, such as shears, punch and drill presses, grinders, buffers, files and all other tools required.



Attendance

  • Full-time regular work hours, typically between Monday-Friday.

  • Position often requires overtime including weekend and some holidays, depending on operational needs.

  • Must be dependable and punctual.

  • Shift work may be required and dependent on Collective Bargaining Agreement.
