Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) is led by Amentum Services, Inc. in partnership with nine teammate companies. The core team is located at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), Huntsville, Alabama, with specialty engineering at other sites across the United States.

Systems Engineering and Integration Specialist

ASED is seeking a senior System Engineer with skills in systems analysis. This System Engineering and Integration (SEI) Specialist position will be:

• Providing engineering services for the NASA SLS Program’s Systems Engineering and Integration Office (SEIO).

• Responsible for the integration of the SLS Program that is developing a launch system to transport a crew of four astronauts to the Moon.

• Join the SEIO Lead System Engineer (LSE) to finalize plans for the NASA Artemis II mission and continue engineering and integration activities for Artemis III and beyond.

Artemis II, III and beyond are a series of NASA missions to explore the Moon and prepare for sending astronauts to Mars. The SLS rocket provides a heavy lift capability to enable exploration and technology development for use at home and in-space.

The primary responsibility of the SEI Specialist is:

• Systems analysis with a focus on products for vehicle flight certification, trade studies, decision analysis, requirements verification, and review of integration plans, procedures and analyses.

• Perform datamining, derive problem statements, conduct data analysis and reduction, identify problem solving options, analyze options, and prepare reports. This also includes review of engineering products such as mass properties reports, non-conformance documentation, deviations and waivers, test products, requirement specifications, verification artifacts, validation data, threat and risk analyses, and all types of integrated vehicle analysis products.

The overall objective of this position is to provide the SEIO LSE with data and information for use in risk reduction activities to ensure the safety of the astronauts and mission success.

A secondary responsibility is:

• Collaboration with team members to build integration products and change packages to enable and enhance vehicle integration and certification for flight.

• Responsible for the reporting of findings at working groups, staff meetings and control board meetings. This may include special assignments to capture research, identify gaps, write documents, and lead working groups.

• Capturing expert inputs and reporting to stakeholders and decision makers such as the SEIO LSE, ASED Team Lead, SLS Chief Engineer and SEIO Manager. This may include reporting to the SLS Program Office and the ASED Director.

The overall task requires knowledge of SLS, a strong background in systems engineering, experience using methods for trade studies and decision analysis, and leadership skills. The position may require deriving requirements, review of requirement specifications, and building interface control documents. The leadership aspect of the job includes planning and organizing technical meetings, conducting effective meetings, strong skills in one or more engineering disciplines, driving change if needed with a focus on results, and ability to collaborate with SMEs of various skill levels and knowledge. This will include leading Digital Engineering Transformation studies, in-flight anomaly tracking and reporting, and other special studies.

Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Systems Engineering or related field is required. A degree from an ABET accredited institution preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS degree with at least 12, MS with 10 or PhD with 8 years of relevant experience in systems engineering.

The work requires excellent oral, written, interpersonal, customer relation skills. This includes presentation skills and experience developing and delivering executive level briefings. The task requires the ability to work with little supervision and guidance

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Travel may be necessary, but infrequent (<5%)

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Requires sitting at a desk to write reports and perform engineering task activities (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and other facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer and other general office equipment 50%.

Attendance:

Normal workday is from 7:00 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. Overtime during the week and weekends may be required to meet schedules (50% max). Attendance and being prompt is important to provide continuous service to the customer; adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences is required. Regular attendance and punctuality are mandatory for meetings and other planned occasions. (100%).

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
