Build a Project that Utilizes AI and Robotics!

As an Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) intern, you will work alongside engineers and scientists on hardware development, payload integration & operations, laboratory & test operations, modeling & simulation, space environments, scientific research and propulsion systems for programs like Human Landing Systems, Space Launch Systems and the International Space Station!

The NASA MSFC SHARC Lab seeking a highly motivated and skilled intern to join its innovative project, REACH. This cutting-edge interactive system enables users to control a robotic arm using voice commands, leveraging advanced technologies such as custom Large Language Model (LLM) applications and image recognition.

Overview:

The Intern will support Project REACH, an interactive project integrating various AI and robotics tools to enable seamless human-robot interaction. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of this exciting project, working with a talented team of engineers and researchers.

While you will assist in a variety of tasks when building the application, your primary focus will be image recognition and robotic simulation. Responsibilities will include:

  • Assist in the design, implementation, and testing of REACH's components, including image recognition and simulation.

  • Collaborate with the team to develop and deploy ROS2 programs for robotics control and perception.

  • Program devices that communicate using various messaging protocols

  • Utilize Gazebo simulations for robotic arm testing and validation.

  • Work with Docker containers to ensure seamless deployment of REACH components.

  • Develop image recognition programs and integrate them with the project's architecture.



Basic Qualifications

BS degree in Engineering or related STEM field is required. Degree program from an ABET accredited institution preferred.

Must be able to provide own transportation

Required skills and experience:

  • Strong programming skills in Python

  • Familiarity with robotics, AI, and machine learning concepts

  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and collaboration skills



Desired skills and experience:

  • Experience with ROS2 and Linux (Ubuntu/Debian) operating systems

  • Prior experience with robotic arm control and programming

  • Familiarity with custom LLM app development

  • Experience with Linux shell scripting and automation tools (e.g., Ansible)

  • Knowledge of Gazebo simulations and Docker containers

  • Proficiency in image recognition libraries (e.g., OpenCV)



Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
