The COMET contract provides overall management and implementation of ground systems capabilities, flight hardware processing, and launch operations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. These tasks will support the International Space Station, Ground Systems Development and Operations, and the Space Launch System, Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, and Launch Services programs.

The Launch Control Systems team is responsible for designing, building and testing the software, hardware and networking systems that is being used to launch the next generation rocket (Space Launch System) for NASA. As part of the Launch Control System, the LCS Software Architect will be responsible for setting the direction, leading the team, and making success a reality for their particular area of responsibility.

This position is responsible for the Software Architecture of the Launch Control System. They are responsible for the design concepts and process implementation for the software design teams, turning conceptual ideas into meaningful and attainable requirements, turning requirements into design, and leading the software team to deliver superior results for NASA's Launch Control System at Kennedy Space Center.

Specific areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:

• Provide technical leadership and direction for LCS Software Design in their area of assigned responsibility.

• Set the overall technical direction for specific areas of the project.

• Champion continuous improvement initiatives and incorporate CMMI Compliance.

• Oversee various forward looking efforts.

• Identify project risks and develop mitigation plans.

• Prototyping concepts.

• Resolve technical disputes between and among software development teams.

• Guide requirements and approve high level designs from Analysis.

• Participate in code reviews.

• Own/Contribute to Software process documents including reviewing Software Design Documents, Coding Standards, Software Development Plan and others.

• Review documents and participate in significant program milestone reviews (Technical Readiness Reviews, Design Certification Reviews, etc).

• Mentor and grow software developers.

• Help identify problems in software and provide guidance for resolution.

• Summarize complex technical information for management.

• Provide technical guidance and planning for problem resolution teams.

• Mentor junior engineers.

• Manage multiple high priority tasks.

BS degree in computer science, software engineering, or other STEM degree, plus ten (10) years of relevant experience and/or an advanced degree.

• Subject Matter Expert in one of more of the CSCI's, System Admin, Triage or other related discipline.

• Must be proficient in the product development life cycle.

• Must be able to excel in a fast pace and evolving project.

• Experience interfacing with customers and Senior Management.

• Demonstrated written and verbal presentation skills for delivery of technical subject matter to internal customers, external customers, and the management team.

• Exercise a high degree of originality and sound judgment in formulating, evaluating and correlating broad engineering/scientific concepts, guiding the analysis of unique problems and developing new and improved techniques and methods.

Physical Requirements

• May be required to climb stairs to access equipment for trouble shooting.

• Will be required to wear hearing protection, eye protection, and other associated personal protective equipment.

• Position may involve extended periods of sitting or standing.

• Physical requirements are sitting, walking, standing, extensive use of stairs, and access to remote structures.

• Position is located on a hazardous testing facility; must be able to quickly evacuate buildings in the event of an emergency.

Work Environment

• May be required to work inside and outside throughout the test complex.

• Position may require individual to travel daily to different areas on site.

• Walking on uneven terrain including paved areas, gravel/rocks, and dirt/sand, may be required to access various locations on the facility.

• Climbing ladders and platforms may be necessary.

• All work must be completed in a safe manner in accordance with NASA and company safety standards.

Equipment and Machines

• Computers and printers used for producing reports and schedules.

• Variety of equipment used in testing.

Attendance

• Full-time work hours.

• Position may require occasional overtime, including weekend work, depending on task.

• Must be dependable and punctual.

• Shift work may be required.

Other Essential Functions

• Must be able to accurately communicate ideas in writing and verbal communication.

• Must be able to travel to support position requirements. This may include travel to and from customer location, which may involve airline travel. In some cases, accommodations can be made for POV, if necessary.

• Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

• Must comply with all “drug free workplace” requirements as mandated by directives issued by the appropriate federal contracting officer and the company, which requires drug testing for use of illegal drugs by employees in sensitive positions.

• Government security clearance may be required in the future.

• Must maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relations with customers, clients, co-workers, and management.
