About the Opportunity Materials Science & Structural Integrity (MSSI) lead research, solve critical client challenges and set industry standards at our research and testing facilities. We are seeking a highly motivated materials testing engineer at our Birchwood laboratory facilities near Warrington in Cheshire, UK. The ideal candidate will have proven experience in conducting tests and analyses on various materials to assess their properties, performance, and durability.
Responsibilities include the specification and delivery of testing projects and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative testing and technology solutions. Proficiency in materials testing, and effective communication abilities are essential. A commitment to safety and continuous improvement is crucial for success in this role.
We support a range of customers, mainly but not exclusively in the nuclear industry, to ensure the economic and safe operation of capital-intensive plant, from both government and private industry. We also actively participate in national and international projects and maintain close links with universities, particularly in relation to the research and development work we undertake and support. Presenting our work at national and international conferences is encouraged.
Role responsibilities - Design and execute load testing procedures for materials under environmentally representative conditions.
- Analyse test data and prepare detailed reports on material performance and characteristics.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to develop specifications and standards for material selection.
- Maintain and calibrate testing equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and safety assessments to ensure equipment maintained and operated in line with currently HSE regulations and industry best practice.
Here’s What You’ll Need - A Degree level qualification or equivalent experience in materials, mechanical engineering, or physical sciences or experience working in a mechanical testing facility or similar with a proven track record of delivering high quality test data.
- Good practical engineering understanding and experience of working in an engineering laboratory environment to strict quality assurance requirements.
- Experience of successfully delivering mechanical testing results. Experience in fatigue testing is advantageous.
- Good understanding of safe working practices in a laboratory environment.
- Experienced with the analysis and presentation of mechanical testing data.
- Some experience working with high pressure high temperature water systems and high-pressure gases is advantageous.
