As a key member of the Engine Systems team, primary duties for the Propulsion Engineer will include:
- Support the planning, design, development, and testing of liquid propulsion systems for various research and development programs.
- Conduct high-fidelity modeling and simulation of liquid propulsion systems.
- Perform power balance modeling and analysis of liquid propulsion systems.
- Attend test readiness meetings and pre- and post-test data reviews. Prepare and present material to review boards.
- Coordinate, develop, and present technical materials related to engine system performance and testing in support of design milestone reviews and anomaly investigations.
- Prepare technical assessments in areas of liquid propulsions system/subsystem sizing and performance.
- Participate in relevant trade teams. Identify and pursue resolution of issues.
- Identify and document customer objectives and product requirements.
- Perform system hazard analyses, risk assessments, root cause analyses, and failure investigations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Educational requirements are a BS plus 15 years of experience, or MS plus 13 years of experience in Aerospace, Mechanical, or related engineering field from an ABET-accredited university preferred
Qualifications include:
- In-depth understanding of pump-fed, liquid rocket engine cycles and operation either through education or work experience.
- Experience with the use of propulsion analysis tools such as ROCETS, GFSSP, CEQUEL, FORTRAN, etc.
- Experience with nuclear thermal propulsion systems, rotating detonation rocket engines, and hypersonic airbreathing propulsion systems desired.
- Experience with cryogenic fluid management desired.
- Exhibited capability to plan and perform systems engineering and analysis tasks independently and as part of a team.
Essential FunctionsWork Environment:Office and laboratory environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%)
Physical Requirements:Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).
Equipment and Machines:Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
Attendance:Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
Other Essential Functions:The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
