Position Title:        Estimator Professional

Purpose of the Position

  • The Estimator is responsible for evaluating the project specifications, requirements, and drawings, ensuring everything required in the project documents is understood and quantified to determine the cost and submit a comprehensive estimate along with supporting documents.
     
  • The Estimator will work closely with the Lead Estimator and Engineers to anticipate all variables that could affect the project cost or schedule.

Primary Responsibilities

Estimating:

  • Review plans, specifications, drawings to determine the cost of the project
  • Analyze time, material, and manpower (i.e., crafts support) requirements for each project
  • Perform takeoffs and develop an estimate of cost to perform the work according to the specifications
  • Stay up to date on the cost of manpower, materials, equipment and subcontractors in the industry. Utilize the company provided software for estimation
  • Raise issues and concerns found during estimation to the Lead Estimator to develop mitigation through contingencies, this includes any variations, specialized activities, areas of risks, possible cost or schedule constraints, and challenging customer or project requirements
  • Provide the Lead Estimator with a detailed cost estimate, corresponding proposal letter and bid summary documents as required
  • Exercise significant independent discretion in developing project estimates and applying “markup” and “labor factors”
  • Attend pre-bid “Job Walk Throughs” meetings as required
  • Analyze special safety and construction code requirements on all projects
  • Need to be a self-starter with the ability to multi-task while working quickly and independently are keys to this job’s success
  • Knowledge of construction estimation processes is a bonus
  • Other duties as assigned by manager/supervisor

Reporting

  • Attend the Estimating group meetings and present to management the status of current bids and estimates
  • Maintain and update the estimation log and other company documents with up to date and accurate information as required
  • Provide accurate and timely ad-hoc reports and information as required by the Lead Estimator
  • Conduct bid reviews for each project to establish consistency, quality, and timeliness among the team as it pertains to estimates.

Required Experience

  • Basic qualifications for Entry-Level Engineer candidates include:
  • Bachelor of Science in an Engineering discipline, Engineering Technology or Construction Management/Science, Construction Technology, preferred.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles.
  • Knowledge of basic business principles sufficient to project and monitor expenses.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word and Excel. Estimating Tools such as RS Means Handbook, Win Est or any other estimating software is preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand technical specifications, blueprints, technical manuals, product/material installation instructions and engineering/architectural drawings.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Experience with construction projects, mechanical/electrical systems, building materials, building mechanics or working with craft workers.
  • General knowledge of safety regulations, ANSI standards, local and state building codes, environmental codes, specific industry codes and guidelines
  • General knowledge of general construction processes, practices and work sites

Physical Requirements

  • Able to perform job duties safely and effectively as required by the position.

Preferences

  • Prior knowledge of NASA site, experienced with working on government installations preferred.
